Update #6 (September 23, 2020)
Mr. Magnuson noted that the District has received numerous comments of appreciation for the Board’s action reflecting an abundance caution for the health and safety of students and staff, and also for their keen interest to ensure high quality student instruction, providing time for a successful implementation of the Phase 1 distance learning model, prior to implementing the Phase 2 hybrid model. He also recognized the District is aware of the great interest among many parents and staff to return students to the classroom sooner.
He further informed the Board that HBCSD staff is preparing for the return of our students in just five weeks, noting that the District currently has a substantial inventory of PPE supplies on site including: 34,000 disposable adult face masks; 10,900 disposable children face masks; 4,000 bottles of hand sanitizer; 2,400 face shields; 11,000 cloth kids face masks; 4,400 cloth adult face masks; outfitted each school office and areas of direct adult/adult and adult/student interaction with plexiglass barriers; and is concurrently planning and preparing campuses and classrooms to meet CDPH recommendations for hygiene, air quality and physical distancing protocols. Further, he stated that the District has earmarked approximately $1,000,000 for additional PPE and custodial services to support our students and staff following their physical return to school.
Mr. Magnuson concluded his report by stating that on October 6, 2020 staff will present the Board a detailed plan for Phase 2 reopening that will include: additional specifics supporting campus safety and hygiene procedures/protocols aligned with CDPH industry guidance; updated student schedules; following review of the A/B instructional model and the AM/PM instructional model; Transportation and Child Nutrition operational plans; further program plans for special education; a Phase 2 program cost update; and thoughts on communicating the plan to stakeholders as we look forward to the return of our students to a safe and healthy school environment.
