Igniting Science Investigation in HBCSD

The mission of the ScienceWorks Consortium is to combine the resources of its member districts and extended communities to support all students in attaining high levels of scientific literacy.  The ScienceWorks Consortium is an innovative and successful partnership of Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach City, and Westminster School Districts, committed to providing every child with multiple opportunities to engage in hands on, inquiry-based science investigations.

The ScienceWorks program will provide students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grades with a broad base of knowledge and skills that will begin a lifetime of continued development in scientific literacy. Through a hands-on, inquiry based study of science, students will:
  • Experience the richness of the natural world
  • Acquire foundational content knowledge at each grade level
  • Be equipped to experience success in high school and beyond
  • Apply scientific principles and processes in everyday life
  • Describe, explain, and predict natural phenomena
  • Discuss matters of scientific and technological concern
  • Increase potential contribution to society and the economy

Students of the Huntington Beach City School District are actively engaged, lifelong learners who ask questions, gather and assemble information, think critically, communicate effectively, and collaborate as a team to investigate, analyze, and solve real-world problems. These habits of mind are strengthened through a hands-on, inquiry based science program that capitalizes upon and enhances the natural curiosity and sense of wonder possessed by each student.

Well prepared, trained teachers work with staff, parents and community partners to facilitate a student-centered science program that is rich in resources, clearly articulated, grounded in sound learning theory, integrated across the curriculum, and includes a balance of life, earth, and physical science experiences.
