Board President's Message

My third time as HBCSD Board President promises to be the most exciting and positive year since my election to the Board in 2006. Work has finally begun on our new and permanent Education Center (the closed Kettler School campus) with a projected move-in anticipated for July of this year. There is certainly a lot of work to be done, but anyone driving by the site will see lots of demolition and construction activity moving satisfactorily forward.

We are also still celebrating the passage of our Measure Q bond by preparing as quickly as possible to implement Phase 1. All of the planned work at the various sites is scheduled out over the next few years and as we anticipate DSA (Division of State Architects) approval soon, we will be well into the first phase before we know it.  Front and center are the 21st Century Classrooms. We have a concept classroom at every school being actively used. Staff meetings with feedback on what works and what doesn’t, suggestions for improvements, as well as ideas on teacher training are ongoing.  Just as exciting is the anticipation of full scale gymnasiums at both of our middle schools!

Our paid preschool program continues to be a huge success and parents are so pleased that many of them are continuing on to our Extended K program and from there to permanent enrollment in the upper grades, which is helpful in keeping our student count up during a time when enrollment is declining in most parts of the county and state.

For schools and districts state wide comparison reporting, we are finally able to wade into the CA School Dashboard, a new multi-measure system. This system provides data for everything student oriented from academic achievements, suspension rates, English Learner proficiency, and chronic absenteeism. High school and unified districts also include graduation rates and college readiness indicators.  Our expectation is that this accountability system will greatly assist us as a school board in making the best decisions for all of our students to ensure that each child reaches his/her full educational potential. And that’s what we are here for!
