Reopening Schools / Reapertura de Escuelas 2020-2021

Mr. Greg Magnuson, HBCSD Interim Superintendent, has released a message to our school community regarding the reopening of schools for 2020-2021. This letter provides insight into the updated three phase instructional model presented by district staff and approved by the HBCSD Board of Trustees at the August 11, 2020 Special Board Meeting. Preliminary Plan for Reopening Schools - Reimagining School / Plan preliminar para la reapertura de escuelas: reinventar la escuela

At the August 4, 2020 Board of Trustees Study Session , the Board discussed the Preliminary Plan for Reopening Schools for the 2020-2021 school year. District staff presented a 3-phase instructional model which includes:
Phase 1 - 100% Virtual Learning ; Phase 2 - Blended Model (part virtual/part in person) ; Phase 3 - Resume Normal Operations (in person). Please click "Read Full Story" to access the Presentation.

HBCSD Reopening of Schools: Planning, Progress & Timing

To address necessary return to school modifications and COVID-19 guidance provided by State and local health agencies, we have created four HBCSD work groups to develop our 2020-2021 school re-opening plans. The planning efforts of the work groups are guided by the following principles:

• Ensure the health and safety of all students and staff;
• Ensure robust and rigorous instruction, regardless of the instructional delivery scenario;
• Ensure student well-being & connection with social-emotional supports; and
• Provide that all policy considerations for the coming school year start with a goal of physically returning students back to school as soon as it is practical

At its meeting on July 21, 2020 the Board of Trustees reviewed a presentation from District staff highlighting community survey results related to school reopening (Click Read Full Story). Board members acknowledged that although conditions and State guidance has evolved since the survey was conducted, the survey data represents key interests of community members and reopening HBCSD schools. The Board of Trustees will review preliminary return to school plans currently being prepared by District staff at its next meeting on August 4, 2020.

Announcement from Gov. Newsom

Following Governor Newsom’s announcement on Friday, July 17th regarding conditions and restrictions to reopen public schools across California, including the release of California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) COVID-19 and Reopening In-Person Learning Framework for K-12 Schools in California, be advised District staff is studying how this will impact the opening of HBCSD's schools for the 2020/21 school year. Board of Trustees Accept Superintendent Haulk's Resignation

At the June 23, 2020 Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees, the Board accepted the resignation of Superintendent Gregg Haulk, who will retire effective August 1. The Board will begin a search for his replacement immediately with plans for new leadership announced by mid-fall 2020. Former Buena Park Superintendent Greg Magnuson will assume interim duties until that time.

2020-21 Family Survey will be released on Wednesday, June 17th!!

Recently the California Department of Education and California Department of Public Health released updated guidance on safely opening schools for the 2020-2021 school year. As we review the guidance documents, Huntington Beach City School District will use the guidance documents along with input from stakeholders to plan for the 2020-2021 school year. The input from you, our HBCSD families, is an essential part of our planning process to safely open our schools. We will be sending out a parent survey directly to parent email addresses on Wednesday, June 17. The email will come from Qualtrics, a vendor that Orange County Department of Education uses. Please check your spam folder if you do not see the email. The plans to safely reopen schools will continue to be developed and evolve throughout the summer as more information becomes available. Follow up information with more specific details regarding our 2020-2021 plans will be sent to families at a later date. We appreciate your input and hope you continue to be well through these uncertain times.
