Mrs. Coulter

I would like to welcome you and your child to Smith School, Room 15.
This page is to help you earn more about our classroom.
Communication
Each Monday your child will bring home a newsletter with information about what is going
on in our classroom. It will tell you about the skills we will be working on, the story we
will be reading, and any special activities that might be taking place. I may ask for help
in the classroom, or ask you to send in something for a special project. The newsletter
will also include the list of the
week's homework. I hope you will find it helpful.
| If you ever need to contact me for any reason there are several ways to do so. You can leave a message on voice mail at 536-1468, x215. I will return your call as soon as possible. |

You can also reach me with e-mail at Mary.Coulter@hbcsd.k12.ca.us. I will check into my e-mail each day and respond. |
There is also the
old fashioned, but reliable note!
I feel it is very important for us to communicate about your child. I will talk with you
any time there is a concern, or something you think I need to know.
Homework
Your child will have homework on Monday through Thursday. Each week we have a spelling
list with assignments for your child to complete at home. Please use lined notebook paper
to complete assignments. I am also happy to receive homework done on the computer. There
is usually one or two nights of math homework each week. The assignment will be listed on
the weekly newsletter.
Your child is also expected to read each evening. They may read aloud with you, or by
themselves. I will send home our reading book each night, and your child needs to practice
the story we are reading that week. Sometimes your child may bring home another small
reader. Please be sure to check each day to see that they brought home their school
reading.
If homework is taking your child more than 30 minutes to complete, we need to talk about
changing your child's assignment. Homework is used to reinforce skills taught at school.
It should not be too difficult for your child to complete alone.
Classwork
On Thursday you will receive a folder containing completed classwork. The front of the
folder contains a sheet which rates work, behavior, and homework. "S" means
things are Satisfactory, "N" means Needs to Improve. There may also be comments
from me. Please look over work with your child. Sign the folder and return to school on
Friday. Feel free to add comments.
Parent Involvement
![]() |
Together we can make
this a successful year for your child. I look forward to meeting you. Please consider
volunteering for classroom activities. We can use parents in the classroom, parents as
journal buddies, parents who like to work at the curriculum lab, or parents who would like
to correct papers at home. Let me know how you would like to help. Thanks.
