What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a progress monitoring software assessment in wide use by primary and secondary schools for monitoring the practice of reading. It primarily determines whether or not a child has read a book.  There are two basic steps to using Accelerated Reader. First, students choose and read a book.  As of 2010, there are more than 125,000 books in the Accelerated Reader database.  Second, students take a quiz at school.  Quizzes cannot be taken outside of Seacliff.  Students earn points based on the starting point value of the book and the percentage of quiz questions answered correctly.  Quizzes for specific books may only be taken once.

How should my child and I choose the books s/he reads for AR?
Use the AR book finder link (see AR Book Finder link below) to check if a book has an associated AR quiz.  Searches may be performed by book title or reading level.  Speak to your child’s teacher about what reading level is right for them.  The Seacliff library has many AR books, as does the public library.

How can I monitor my child’s progress?
Accelerated Reader reports are generated on demand and help students, teachers, and parents monitor student progress.  Your child’s teacher may give you feedback on AR progress.  You may also log into your child’s account from home using your student’s name and password (see AR Home Login link below) and view quizzes taken, points earned, and average book level.  After you log in, there is a drop down bar on the upper right of the screen where you can change your view from the whole school year to the current marking period (the current month).

How does the Seacliff AR incentive program work?
Prizes are awarded to students at the monthly assembly based on earning point values corresponding to predetermined levels of achievement (see AR Levels and Points List link below). Points accumulate throughout the school year.  Students are awarded a prize when they reach a new level in the month prior (cutoff varies) to the following month’s assembly.
