Message From The Principal

Hawes Elementary School

Upon the subject of education, not presuming to dictate any plan or system respecting it, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people may be engaged in.
-- Abraham Lincoln

As we embark on the 2009-2010 school year, I would like to welcome some talented teachers to our staff. Caryn Chalabian, formerly at Huntington Seacliff School, Amy Volk, formerly a GATE teacher at Peterson School and Julie Gray, an experienced HBCSD teacher who is returning from teaching in Germany. Their teaching experience and positive attitudes will only serve to enhance the learning experience at Hawes!

In addition to the continuing focus on academic excellence at Hawes, we are implementing a school wide positive behavior system. The plan includes specific desired actions and behaviors students will be taught to engage in throughout their day at Hawes:
Have understanding for others,
Always be respectful,
We are responsible,
Keep to the plan and
Stay safe.

Students exhibiting these positive behaviors will be given “Rockin’ Hawk” slips and once ten are collected, students will earn a special Principal’s Award. Positive behavior posters will be visible throughout the campus to remind students about the positive behaviors we want students to demonstrate. The student discipline referral also reflects more specific behaviors students and staff need to be aware of and document. These new positive behavior system components will lead to increased specific communication to families and students as well consistency among the staff. This is a great next step for our school and I look forward to seeing its positive impact.

Full day kindergarten is another positive change here! Our team is working diligently to adjust to the longer day and the extra learning activities these kindergarteners will get to participate in. *Please check our new bell schedule for updated information on arrival, dismissal and lunch times.

I am excited to begin this year with our school community. I am honored to serve as your principal.

Sincerely,

Heidi Harvey
